Excluding User Experience from the Design Plan is the first mistake which is often committed by the UI (User Interface) Department in the humdrum of meeting strict deadlines. Most of them tend to play around with just the aesthetic part and thus they completely overlook what impact it can leave on the end users. As a result, as soon as they are finished and go live, they end up discovering what blunder they had made by not focusing on the Conversion part. But at that time, they are left with no option other than revamping everything again which badly hits both Project Time and the Project Budget.
Include UX in your Plan right from the beginning. Strive to build an “easy to use” web design or app, even if you have to let the “Wow” factor go because a Pretty Website doesn’t reflect your Brand delivering a “Good Product” or offering a “Good Service” but nice features and functionalities will. Clearly define your business goals and sync it with your user’s expectations. While strategising a Plan, ask questions like:-
And don’t forget to keep in mind the kind of online niche you are targeting. While deciding on technologies to be used in the web design, don’t forget to exclude Flash Animations if you really want to enhance your website performance and do justice with the patience of the visitors.
A couple of designers believe in just cluttering all the information, graphics, posts, advertisements, social media sharing buttons, pop ups, contact info etc, here and there on a single page which seriously affects the browsing experience of novice users on the site. Thus, it is likely that potential visitors end up madly frustrated finding nothing useful and will quickly move away!!
Pay heed to organize the information in a way that is easy on the hands, easy on the eyes and easy on the head. Yes, easy on the head also!! Confused?? By easy on the head, I mean it should be “Understandable” as most of the new visitors won’t like to spend time getting used to your design.
Navigation is the most significant part of the Web Design and ignoring on this part can kill both your clicks and conversions. Look at “Navigation” as the main Backbone of your website. You can enhance UX with smooth navigation and this will subsequently increase inbound traffic and thus boost the CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization). Often, websites with improper navigation loose conversions just because the customers get lost scratching their heads with nested pages (pages inside pages) and they don’t find a way out.
Say, for example, you developed an ecommerce site that has thousands of products, and tens of categories. Obviously, for each category and sub-category you will have a separate webpage. Suppose the customer reaches to a product like “Nike Shoes –Pink”. Now it is likely that if the product doesn’t fascinate him, he would want to browse more and more products and probably he won’t like to look for the previous page where the Nike Brand was listed. By using Links on Breadcrumbs for Navigation Like Men-Shoes-Nike-Pink etc, your web design can easily communicate to him “where he is” currently and “where he needs to go next”. Plus, you can even list the products of other Nike Branded Shoes just below the product to make the experience even more better or alternatively, you can even place small Left and Right “Arrows” for him to navigate to other products. So it’s all about what easy way you figure out, what behaviour you explore, and what you come up with as a final product.
Use Breadcrumbs for easy navigation. Don’t forget to put Clickable Hyperlinks on your navigational hierarchy so that users can locate the pages of their interest on your site. Plus, use appropriate title for the Navigation links that you are displaying in front of users. If you are using an image instead, don’t forget to include the alt attribute in your coding. On the Homepage of your website, include Links to your inbound pages in both the “Header” section (Structured Menu Bar at the Top) and “Footer” section so that every page is easily accessible.
A form is the most integral part of every website, may it be a contact form, a sign up/sign in form or a checkout form. But despite knowing that an “easy to fill” form is crucial, designers do commit mistakes while crafting one for their website or client’s website. Make sure that you do a comprehensive analysis of the critical needs of your business before deciding which fields are to be incorporated in the form. Here, I would suggest you to list down all the fields in your Plan and then bifurcate them into 2 categories “Primary” and “Secondary”. Jot down all your most important fields like, name, contact, email id etc into “Primary” category and while coding, mark them with an asterisk sign (*) to indicate them as mandatory. Now, list all the “not-so-important” form fields into the “secondary” category so that users who may be running short of time can easily fill up 3-4 fields and don’t get irritated.
To make the biggest difference in your conversions, you have to understand the strong analogy between User Experiences and the Web designs. The golden key to fascinate customers lies in testing everything before going live and learning to evolve with the behaviour of the end-customers.
